Biography

Dr. Lakshmi K. Raut is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Chicago. He was a Staff Economist at the Social Security Administration from October 2005 to September 31, 2025, when he took retirement. Before coming to SSA, he taught economics at Yale University, University of California-San Diego, University of Hawaii-Manoa and California State University at Fullerton. He has also worked as a consultant at the World Bank, and has worked on the International Collaboration Project Team on Aging, sponsored by the Ministry of Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University, a Hewlett Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the University of Chicago and a M. Stat. degree in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute. His research and teaching areas include Machine (Deep) Learning; Applied Econometrics; Economic Theory; Early Childhood Factors and Health and Human Capital Development; Economic Growth and Development. He has published articles in journals and books, including articles in collaboration with Nobel Laureates and many eminent economists.
